I use this to sweeten my coffee. I know, the coffee purists out there will disdainfully sniff in my direction, but I drink coffee for the caffeine not the flavor. In a just world, coffee would taste as good as it smells. But for now, there's Smoky Mountain. One bottle lasts... oh god, I don't know how long. Long enough between ordering that I forget when the last time I ordered it. 8 months? 11? I drink coffee like a fish drinks water. A little bit goes a LONG way.If I had one complaint, it would be that the bottle requires scissors or a good sharp knife to open up the dispensing tip and it's never consistent. Some bottles end up with a decent sized hole in the end that means you just kind of shake the bottle over the coffee and sometimes it's a pinprick that will let you squeeze out a thin stream of liquid crack. I prefer the thin stream as it's easier to gauge how much you're consuming. But getting that consistently is difficult. Especially when you only get to practice once every 8 months. 11. Whatever.Saccharine is one of most studied chemicals in people. Its 100’s of times sweater than sugar. In fact its so sweet the main ingredient in powdered saccharine packet is talc to make you feel like you're actually adding something .Also back then most drugs were make a chemical and figure out what it was does - if its a medication or a fuel or a polish. No idea - try everything - today we have a strategy to create a chemical to meet a known need. Less about random use.Nutria sweet is 10 times sweeter than sugar - was originally discovered in 50’s accidentally while evaluating as a ulcer drug - so in a purely amount of chemical added - more of any synthetic sweetener will be required than saccharine.Saccharine has been around since 1879. In the 70’s Tab was first national diet drink and it used Saccharine. There was also a study that was done and FDA required a label “may cause cancer in laboratory animals”.So on the science side - we can’t cure a disease we can’t study. Actually Cancer patients are frequently not allowed experimental therapy even when they are ???? % going to die after exhausting all known treatments. The FDA is hesitant to give a potentially life saving drug approval with out proof. Without giving it you have no proof. Insurance will only pay for treatments without FDA approval which requires both proof of SAFTY in one study and proof of EFFICACY separately. So its a vicious circle of nothing happening- and cancer wins.So imagine the very valuable ability to be able to cause the disease you seek to fight - you can study it -figure out how to fight it - prove a value for possible human use. Develop a drug.So in 70’s we were trying lots of things to cause cancer so it could be studied. Makes sense right? So one thing done was giving extremely high amounts of chemicals in a lob controlled setting. Saccharine was one such chemical. In the trial some of the test subjects did indeed develop cancer while ingesting up to their body weight. Then about 30 years later the question was asked - do lab animals randomly get cancer like people with seemingly similar environment. So since we did not know - a study was done again. The theory - we KNOW saccharine caused cancer so lets do the same study and compare a group that gets nothing.SURPRISE! The group that got saccharine did have some cancer - however, the group that got nothing HAD MORE CANCER. That label you remember on the pink packets is no longer there. Go look! I’m not going so far as to say Saccharine prevents cancer but, using the same 1970’s logic that said ? Point is its safe - ’ve never found myself waking up in the middle of the night craving saccharine- but, Diet Coke which is significant % Nutrasweet (generuc name aspartame) I have found I woke up craving. Aspertame is made up of Phenylalanine and aspartic acid (90% of Aspartame) Unlike saccharineIt breakdowns to Methane, then the methanol is then converted to formaldehyde. The formaldehyde is next converted to formic acid. Formic acid is toxic and is commonly used as an activator to strip epoxy and urethane. Like most drugs its not what you ingest but, the breakdown by the body that makes it an active chemical. Ill use salt as an example. Its not just salt in the body - it becomes its parts Sodium and Chloride they bond with other things and you now have active chemicals.Infact , when a child is born we first wrap them - then apply antibiotic eye ointment- then draw blood from heel to send for PKU test - the inability to break down phenylalanine. Really this is the first thing we actually are concerned about? Where did you just see that word? I’m just sharing my medical/science perspective on why I think Saccharine is amazing. I'm so happy to have found this sweetener! Unfortunately our local grocery stores don't appear to be carrying it right now, but my husband and I had to do quite a bit of business travel this past year, and I was lucky enough to stumble upon it on the shelves at Publix. Since I try to do all of our cooking even when traveling, I picked up the bottle and was so glad I did. I've used other forms of liquid saccharin and other artificial sweeteners, and find this one the best for my needs. The packets can sometimes be a problem, given they still contain a trace amount of carbs, and the other liquids can either be on the bitter side or too sweet for my liking. This one seems to strike the perfect balance, and I use it to add a bit of sweetening to my lemon water, tea, iced coffee, smoothies, and even sometimes to cottage cheese or plain yogurt, along with a sprinkling of cinnamon. It's nice to be able to support a small food company at a time when competition for market share has never been more fierce!...but, that headline aside, the strength is half to 66.6% that of other brands. So whether that's worth it to you is for you to decide. I would absolutely recommend this for anyone first transitioning from sugar to artificial sweeteners - this product makes the transition smoother than products with a strong aftertaste (anything with stevia tends to have a weird minty aftertaste... not good with some flavors, IMO). I've used Smoky Mountain sweetener for years and I love it. Since it's a liquid it mixes instantly with other liquids without all that stirring, stirring and more stirring that is required with powders. I use it everyday when I make a new batch of iced tea. Some have mentioned an undesirable "aftertaste" but I have not noticed that at a all. Smoky Mountain seems to be getting harder to find in stores, so I buy it in bulk now on Amazon. Love it!I prefer this product since it is a locally made North Carolina product. It is easy to transport in case of picnic or tailgating. It helps me cut back on sugar intake and does a good job of sweetening coffee or tea.My number 1 choice for cooking as a sugar substitute.Has no bitter aftertaste, very concentrated. 2 tbs= 1 cup sugarMy mother is a diabetic and has used this for years for her coffee and tea. I have started using it also and it is really good! It is sometimes hard to find in our area, so I was very happy to see it on Amazon.
