Editorial Reviews Product Description A BACKSTAGE PASS TO ONE OF THE GREATEST ROCK 'N ROLL BANDS OF ALL TIME, ''VAN HALEN'' Narrated by original MTV VJ J.J. Jackson, The Van Halen Story: The Early Years chronicles the rise of Edward Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony from their formative years to their transformation into a worldwide phenomenon. Their tale is told by childhood friends, fellow musicians, producers, and the band themselves. Rare footage and never-before-seen photos document their remarkable story. It only became clear to me about 30 mins in that this film was put together without the band's music and relying on various interviews that were pieced together. So strange to watch a music doc without the music! Not recommended except if you're a super fan.I gotta say, I'm just scratching my head watching this right now. 20 minutes in, and not a single note of Van Halen. Why use generic copyright-free audio clips to make a documentary of the world's greatest rock band??? If you are showing footage and pictures, you've already obviously obtained permission to use them. Why not just go ahead and actually have audio clips of the actual band you're making a documentary of???Sometime in the future this band will get the professional documentary they deserve. Here's an idea: if you're putting together a documentary on a band, maybe include some of their music. Thus stories from assorted hangers-on about the early years are ok but there was no music to back it up. Had to bail out halfway through just couldn't take it anymore.I like the video as I'm a long time Van Halen fan. This doesn't have Van Halen music nor the band's stamp of approval. It does have JJ Jackson, 1 of the 5 original MTV VJ's, narrating the story. Compared to the RUSH documenting this is like watching a fan made video. If you're a fan you will like it. If you're just a music fan wanting to hear stories about Van Halen through 1984 then it's good entertainment. The interview's with the original members of Van Halen that do appear are from other interview segments and not specifically for this release. Not a very insightful documentary. A mash up of a bunch of interviews with "hangers-on" and "old friends" mixed in with some archival footage of Eddie, Alex, David Lee and Michael from years past. All in all, it is merely OK, but not really groundbreaking with any real journalistic impact. However, they did do a good job digging up old flyers and really early band promo items from the days when they played in Pasadena in the early 1970's. Poorly narrated, to the point that it sounds generic, like a guy who would sell TV appliances and used cars. Mostly interviews and recollections of people that claim to have known them. No emotions, no band struggles... Photos, but no early footage of them playing; lots of stock footage. Some interesting stories, but mostly it feels like the band had nothing to do with it. No Van Halen music! Don't know if anybody realized, but there is no Van Halen music in this film. One person after another saying how amazing their playing and vocals were - with no music. BTW, the narrator is apparently an excellent reader - he sounds like he is reading the news and has no idea who Van Halen is.This must have been made to fill time on VH1 or something but yet they didn't get any permission to use actual Van Halen music. You dont realize that until they get to their first album and then you dont hear anything from the album. Standard lame setups and late 90s editing effects. However - if you know nothing about them this does provide that timeline of history.
